Nashville Airport Starts $40 Million Terminal Upgrade, Expanding Escalators to 16

Q: Will Hong Kong's new terminal, requiring a train to reach gates, truly enhance the passenger experience or just add another complex step?

Hong Kong’s new Terminal 2 is likely to improve the experience for many passengers, but only if the train link to the gates is fast, frequent and clearly integrated into the journey. The upside is clear. The terminal’s $1.65 billion upgrade adds smart check-in kiosks, express bag drop and hybrid counters, with airport officials saying check-in can be completed in about 45 seconds. Security and immigration are also now handled in T2, which should reduce pressure on Terminal 1 and help Hong Kong International Airport absorb rising traffic as it targets capacity of 100 million passengers a year. For a large hub, an automated people mover can be more efficient than forcing long walks. The risk is that, for now, T2 is not a full end-to-end terminal. Passengers check in and clear formalities in T2, then must take the Automated People Mover to Terminal 1 for boarding because T2’s own concourse and gates will not open until 2027. That creates an extra transfer point, and some passengers on opening day already said more convenient boarding arrangements were needed. So the train itself is not the problem; poor execution would be. If waits are short, signage is strong, and flight information is synchronized from check-in to platform to gate, the system can feel seamless. If not, passengers will see it as an added complication. In the short term, T2 is a partial improvement. Its full value will be clearer only when its own gates open next year.

$40 million in renovations began June 1 at Nashville International Airport to expand and upgrade terminal entrance areas.
BNA said the project will raise escalator capacity from six to 16 to speed movement between ground transportation and baggage claim.
Elevator capacity will also double through one added elevator and replacement of the airport’s two existing elevators.
The Nashville project was one of several airport infrastructure moves reported globally, alongside new U.S. FAA grants and terminal upgrades elsewhere.
