More than 290 flights scheduled from Sunday through Tuesday have been canceled, mainly on routes departing from and arriving in Okinawa, as Severe Tropical Storm Jangmi moves north.
180-kph gusts are forecast in Okinawa on Monday, with the storm expected to approach Okinawa and Amami through Tuesday before tracking toward western to eastern Japan by Wednesday.
200 to 300 millimeters of rain could fall in various areas, and the Japan Meteorological Agency warned of high waves, storm surges, landslides, overflowing rivers and flooding in low-lying areas.
Amami Oshima residents are already preparing: fishers are tying up boats and shoppers are stocking up at supermarkets, while airlines say more cancellations remain possible.
