North Yorkshire Police said a 13-year-old girl died after she was pulled from the River Wharfe near Burnsall in the Yorkshire Dales on Sunday evening.
18:30 BST was when she was reported missing; members of the public helped before she was taken to hospital by air ambulance, where she later died.
At least 15 water-related deaths have been recorded during the recent heatwave, including a 15-year-old girl who died after getting into difficulty off Merseyside and a 19-year-old man rescued from a Nottinghamshire lake.
