  • Anthropic’s Claude reached 14% of global downloads among six leading AI apps in Q2 2026 so far, up from 1% in each quarter of 2025, while ChatGPT’s share fell to 47% from 67% a year earlier.
  • Sensor Tower said ChatGPT still leads overall usage, but Claude’s monthly active users jumped 627% year over year versus ChatGPT’s 67%, suggesting users are testing rivals more readily than in 2025.
  • A February clash with the Defense Department helped fuel Claude’s rise: after Anthropic objected to military and surveillance uses, Claude app downloads jumped 55% week over week, while ChatGPT downloads fell 5.6%.
  • Web traffic shows a similar shift. In April, ChatGPT captured 53.7% of AI chatbot site visits, down from 77.6% a year earlier, as Gemini rose to 26.7% and Claude to about 8%.
  • Even so, ChatGPT remains far larger in absolute use, averaging 183.7 million daily web visits and 245 million mobile daily active users in April, as both OpenAI and Anthropic reportedly eye IPOs this year.
