Shelby police fired an officer Saturday after a home security video showed him wrestling a 34-year-old Black woman to the ground and punching her repeatedly during an arrest.
The footage captured the woman asking for mental health care, saying she was off her medication and repeatedly asking officers to call her father; a criminal justice expert said the force appeared far beyond what the situation required.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is now reviewing the case for possible criminal violations after protests in Shelby demanded the officer’s dismissal and further accountability.
The woman still faces breaking-and-entering, resisting and assault charges, while her family says she suffered a broken nose, black eyes, a cut lip and possible concussion.
