Tre Phelps was tossed after a sixth-inning two-run homer in Georgia’s 6-1 NCAA regional final win over Liberty, and coach Wes Johnson was ejected moments later for arguing the call.
Umpires acted after Phelps made hand signals and celebrated toward the Liberty dugout while circling the bases, though it was unclear exactly what he said or whom he addressed.
Georgia still pulled away with four eighth-inning runs, including a homer from Michael O’Shaughnessy, who replaced Phelps after the junior’s 19th home run of the season.
The win sent the Bulldogs to a super regional against the Starkville regional winner, but Phelps must sit out the next game because of the ejection.
Georgia’s postseason run remains alive as it chases its first College World Series appearance since 2008.
