Iran Fires Ballistic Missile at PAK Base in Iraqi Kurdistan After May 29 Border Attack
6 articles · Updated · Institute for the Study of War · May 31
An Iranian ballistic missile hit a Kurdistan Freedom Party headquarters in Darashakran, Erbil province, on May 31, with a PAK spokesperson saying the strike caused no casualties.
The attack likely answered a May 29 assault by Kurdish opposition fighters on an Iranian border guard unit in Chaldran County near Iran's northwestern frontier.
PAK said Iran had already struck the same base on May 25 with at least 4 missiles and several drones, wounding 9 people.
The group also said Iranian forces and Iran-backed Iraqi militias have attacked PAK positions more than 50 times since the war began on Feb. 28.
The strike fits Tehran's long-running pattern of accusing Kurdish opposition groups in Iraqi Kurdistan of stirring unrest inside Iran and aiding Israeli operations.

Iranian Missile Strikes Surge Past 270 in Iraqi Kurdistan: Civilian Targets, Kurdish Resistance, and Regional Fallout
Overview
On May 31, 2026, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) launched a ballistic missile strike on the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) base in Iraqi Kurdistan, following a series of escalating incidents. This attack, which caused no casualties, came just days after Kurdish opposition fighters attacked an Iranian border guard unit and after the IRGC killed two PAK members. The strike was part of a broader campaign, as Iran had already targeted the same base with missiles and drones on May 25, wounding nine people. These repeated attacks reflect Iran’s ongoing efforts to suppress Kurdish opposition and respond to perceived threats along its border.
