Surry County law enforcement arrested Michael Puckett, 55, late Sunday night after authorities had searched for him since Friday.
Carroll County deputies had gone to a Fancy Gap Highway home around 9:30 p.m. Friday for a welfare check when investigators say Puckett opened fire on two deputies.
Deputy Logan Utt was killed in the shooting, and a second deputy was wounded; authorities did not release an updated condition for that deputy.
Puckett fled after the attack, prompting a multi-agency search involving Mount Airy police and sheriff's offices in Surry and Rockingham counties.
Sheriff Kemp said his focus has shifted to supporting his officers and Utt's family after the arrest ended the regional manhunt.
