Hasan Piker used a Sunday livestream to accuse New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill of helping President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda by backing state police deployment around protests at Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center.
Sherrill said she would not let unrest give ICE a pretext to expand federal operations in New Jersey, but Piker argued the state was effectively doing the crackdown itself with troopers in anti-riot gear and on horseback.
Nine arrests were reported by DHS as demonstrations continued outside the facility, where activists allege poor detention conditions and inadequate food; the department has disputed those claims.
Piker also said journalists were being mistreated after reports an Associated Press photographer was injured, then widened his attack to Democrats he says have supported immigration enforcement through legislation and funding.
The clash adds to pressure on Sherrill as Delaney Hall becomes a flashpoint in New Jersey’s immigration debate and Piker expands his activism for Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates.
