Overtime decided the final when Konsta Helenius beat Switzerland for a 1-0 Finland victory in Sunday’s IIHF World Championship gold medal game.
Helenius created the winner himself, circling in the offensive zone and firing from the inside edge of the right circle for his third goal and sixth point in six tournament games.
The 19-year-old had already delivered Finland’s semifinal winner against Canada and emerged as one of the team’s key forwards after joining the squad when Buffalo’s playoff run ended.
On Finland’s top line, Helenius skated with NHL veterans Aleksander Barkov and Mikael Granlund as the Finns secured the world title.
