Snopes said the viral image of a McDonald’s worker chained to a food-prep station appears to be a genuine photo, but it has not verified the context and issued no truth rating.
A TikTok user who claimed to have posted the original image said the worker was an employee and the scene was “just goofy,” adding that managers asked for the post to be removed.
May 13 Instagram reposts appear to be the earliest public trace Snopes found, and menu text in the image — including “Snack Wrap,” “McCrispy Deluxe” and “McChicken” — pointed to a McDonald’s kitchen.
Snopes contacted McDonald’s, the Alabama Department of Corrections and about a dozen nearby restaurants; some denied the photo came from their stores, while others offered no clear answer.
The fact-checker also noted later AI-expanded versions of the image circulated online, but said the earliest-known photo showed no visible signs of digital manipulation.
