Alex Palou grabbed his third straight IndyCar pole on Saturday, beating Will Power in Detroit with a 1:01.9017 lap in the Firestone Fast Six.
Power, the series record-holder with 71 career poles, had briefly led qualifying at 1:02.1249 before Palou delivered the faster final-session run.
The pole is Palou’s 16th career IndyCar pole and puts the points leader on the front row beside Power, with Scott McLaughlin and Scott Dixon in Row 2.
Palou has now taken May poles on three circuit types—Indianapolis road course, Indy 500 oval and Detroit street course—but noted he failed to convert the previous two into wins.
Detroit’s tight, bumpy 1.7-mile street circuit could still scramble the race: defending winner Kyle Kirkwood qualified sixth after mistakes, and David Malukas crashed in qualifying and will start last.
As Alex Palou dominates qualifying, can veteran Will Power leverage the track's notorious chaos to finally beat him?
