After the fire was discovered on May 29 at about 150 hectares, Alberta Wildfire deployed firefighters, helicopters, airtankers, heavy equipment and night-vision aircraft. By May 30, the fire was still classified as out of control, but officials said it had not moved closer to Conklin, about 10 kilometres away. That indicates suppression efforts were having some effect even before the weather changed. At the same time, officials openly said heavy rain expected on May 31 would help suppression. The evacuation alert was cancelled that same day, with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo saying the wildfire’s status had changed and the risk to the community had dropped. That timing strongly suggests rainfall played an important role in reducing fire behaviour and improving containment prospects. So this was not simply luck, and not solely a firefighting victory either. The most defensible reading is that crews and aircraft prevented the fire from worsening while conditions were dangerous, and the rain then gave them a major advantage. Without the suppression work, the fire could have been in a more threatening position by the time the rain arrived. Without the rain, the alert may have lasted longer.

A 72-hour emergency kit, an evacuation plan and immediate property-clearing steps were advised, including moving flammable items 1.5 metres from homes and propane tanks or woodpiles 10 metres away.
