Imperial College London researchers say solar-sail probes could reach the heliopause—about 9 billion miles from the Sun—within 10 to 20 years, while some near-Sun science missions are already technically feasible.
The study found the biggest gaps are not basic propulsion but heat tolerance, large-sail deployment and attitude control, especially for sun-diving missions that must survive intense radiation close to the Sun.
A nearer-term path would use sails for heliophysics missions around the Sun-Earth L1 point, where concepts like NASA's canceled Solar Cruiser could hold otherwise unstable positions without fuel and improve solar-storm warning.
More ambitious designs could skim 2 million to 4.3 million miles above the Sun and accelerate to about 50 AU a year—far faster than Voyager 1's 3.6 AU—but would require ultrathin materials that can endure roughly 1,000C.
Researchers say progress now depends less on physics than on engineering maturity and funding, with short-term Earth-relevant missions seen as the likeliest stepping stone to deep-space solar sailing.
