Saturday’s three New York SailGP races were ultimately ruled unscored after strong, gusty winds made it unsafe to launch the full 12-boat fleet, leaving only four teams on the Hudson.
Organizers prioritized craning boats in by season standings, but confusion followed: Spain’s Diego Botin said he was told the racing was effectively exhibition-only, while Britain’s Dylan Fletcher believed championship points were at stake.
Britain won the first race and Spain the next two, but the results will not count toward the season standings; Sunday’s racing is still scheduled to count.
Australia, dominant in the previous two events, suffered damage to its front crossbeam and port-side foil case after a nosedive, putting Tom Slingsby’s team in a race against time to return.
Sunday is expected to bring much lighter wind, shifting the problem from launching boats to whether there will be enough breeze to race against the Hudson’s strong currents.
As high-tech boats break under nature's fury, is SailGP's data-driven pursuit of speed outpacing its ability to ensure sailor safety?
With Saturday's chaotic results wiped clean, who will conquer the Hudson's fickle winds to claim the New York title?
