Biohaven won FDA clearance to start clinical trials of BHV-8100, a compound aimed at improving glucose use in neurons, after generating preclinical evidence with Bexorg’s human-brain testing system.
Bexorg’s BrainEx platform keeps donated human brains metabolically active for up to 24 hours after death by pumping blood substitute, oxygen and filtered fluids through the organ while sensors track hundreds of physiological measures.
About 130 donor brains have already been used by Biohaven, and one Parkinson’s candidate that failed in mice showed efficacy in human tissue at a dose 20 times lower than expected, cutting roughly a year from development.
The company says the setup avoids restoring consciousness by suppressing electrical activity with propofol and using organs supplied through transplant networks with family consent.
Backed by $42.5 million, Bexorg is scaling toward 1,600 brains a year and aims to extend viability to two weeks while building an AI model to simulate drug testing.
