Summary
Romuald Wadagni was inaugurated on May 24 as Benin's president, promising to turn economic growth into jobs, basic services and stronger social protection.
The 49-year-old former finance minister said he would also confront worsening security threats as jihadist attacks spilling from the Sahel have intensified in northern Benin.
His swearing-in followed an April 12 election in which he won more than 94% of the vote over Paul Hounkpe, with the Constitutional Court confirming the result on Sunday.
Wadagni succeeds Patrice Talon, who stepped down after two terms, and is expected to continue reforms that improved growth and Benin's business climate.
The handover comes after a failed coup attempt in December and amid regional strains, though Niger's presence at the ceremony hinted at a possible easing of tensions.
