Gemini has climbed to about 750 million monthly users in 2026, making it by far the closest challenger to ChatGPT even as OpenAI still reports roughly 900 million weekly users.
Google’s push is being driven by distribution and pricing: its roughly $8 entry plan includes 200GB of Drive storage, while higher tiers add perks such as 5TB storage and YouTube Premium Lite.
That value is reinforced by deep integration across Android, Search, Gmail, Docs and Drive, with new agent features such as Google Spark and Gemini-powered app actions extending its reach inside Google’s ecosystem.
Google also appears stronger in video generation through Veo and the newer multimodal Gemini Omni, while a more generous free tier exposes more users to high-end models before usage limits kick in.
The narrowing gap also reflects pressure on OpenAI, whose rocky GPT-5 rollout, government ties and other controversies have dented its standing while Google steadily improved Gemini after Bard’s weaker start.
