Specialist crews were still searching the River Don in Mexborough on Sunday for an 11-year-old boy last seen entering the water near Ferry Boat Lane.
South Yorkshire Police said emergency services were called at about 20:00 BST on Saturday after reports the boy had gone into the river and was not seen getting out.
Underwater searches are part of the multi-agency operation, with witnesses and items left on the riverbank helping officers identify where he may have entered.
Police said the boy's family is being supported and urged the public to stay away from the area so emergency teams can work safely.
