African Development Bank Allocates $650 Million for Uganda-Kenya Border Railway

  • $650 million has been tentatively set aside by the African Development Bank to help finance a railway from Kampala to Malaba on the Kenyan border, Uganda said.
  • Abdul Kamara, the bank’s vice president for regional development, integration and business delivery, announced the pledge during talks with a Ugandan delegation at the lender’s annual meeting in Brazzaville.
  • The funding is not yet final: Uganda’s Finance Ministry said the project’s financing structure will be concluded during a mission appraisal next month.
  • The planned line would strengthen Uganda’s rail link to Kenya, backing a cross-border transport corridor from the capital to the frontier.
