More than 1 million people entered a Hyrox race in the 2025/26 season, underscoring how hybrid training—mixing cardio and strength—has moved from niche sport into mainstream fitness.
Hyrox’s format of eight 1km runs plus strength stations such as sled pushes and farmer’s carries has helped popularize the model, alongside CrossFit and social media challenges built around dual performance goals.
Researchers cited in the report say hybrid training can improve strength, muscle mass, endurance, speed and agility, while also offering time-efficient workouts and reported gains in stress, self-esteem and social connection.
For beginners, exercise specialists recommend starting two or three times a week at low to moderate intensity, building a base over four to six weeks, and allowing 24-48 hours of recovery between sessions.
The broader appeal is flexibility: people can train in gyms, classes, parks or at home, while WHO guidance still centers on 150-300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity weekly plus strength work on two days.
