Multiple Clovis police officers moved in to monitor a shouting confrontation outside the CIF state championships after "Save Girls Sports" activists arrived near the end of an LGBTQ-led press conference.
The event centered on trans athlete AB Hernandez, who is competing for state titles in 3 girls' jumping events, with Hernandez's mother and local advocacy groups speaking in support before counterprotesters appeared.
Police vehicles were already nearby, and the standoff ended without direct intervention; the Clovis Police Department declined to comment.
Beth Bourne, who led the counterprotest, said the issue was unfair to girls and to Hernandez, while activist Daisy Gardner urged her to "learn and educate."
The meet has drawn renewed tension for a second straight year after a 2025 protest at the same state finals ended with a pro-trans activist arrested on alleged assault charges.
