Horseback troopers and riot police used tear gas grenades, pepper spray, noise bombs and shields Friday night after rioters refused orders to move into a designated First Amendment zone outside Newark’s Delaney Hall.
The clash escalated when protesters commandeered police barriers and smashed ICE vehicles; authorities said the crowd was organized, with a nearby supply tent stocked with thousands of water bottles and other items.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill said the police operation was needed to protect public safety from an increased ICE presence, while ICE and DHS thanked New Jersey State Police for helping restore order and protect federal officers.
The unrest followed claims that migrants at the facility were mistreated, allegations DHS rejected, saying detainees are fed, paid for work and largely held after committing U.S. crimes in addition to immigration violations.
Friday’s violence marked the seventh day of demonstrations at Delaney Hall, and police mounted an even larger presence Saturday as counter-protesters and pro-ICE groups gathered.
