Francesca Hong, a 37-year-old state lawmaker and restaurant owner, has moved ahead in early polling for Wisconsin’s Aug. 11 Democratic gubernatorial primary despite running on an openly democratic-socialist platform.
Hong’s rise has been fueled by early organizing and visibility: her campaign says it has about 3,000 active volunteers, has held 250 events statewide and has 230 more planned.
Her platform includes free child care, a $20 minimum wage and a moratorium on data center construction, while past calls to abolish the police and arrest ICE agents with the National Guard have sharpened electability concerns.
The campaign still faces financial hurdles in the 9-candidate field: Mandela Barnes is polling second and has raised more than $2 million, while Hong has brought in about $635,000.
Hong’s emergence highlights a broader midterm test for Democrats, as left-wing candidates in competitive states argue economic populism can win swing voters while party moderates warn it could hurt in general elections.
