Jacob Johnson's second solo homer — off UCLA closer Easton Hawk in the ninth — lifted No. 4 Saint Mary's to a 3-2 win over the top overall seed in the Los Angeles Regional opener.
Johnson also opened the scoring in the fourth, while Makoa Sniffen's RBI double in the sixth erased UCLA's brief 2-1 lead built on Roman Martin's homer and Roch Cholowsky's sacrifice fly.
John Damozonio kept the Gaels in control with seven innings of two-run ball, and Cam Staton finished the upset with two scoreless innings after allowing only one hit.
UCLA remains alive in the double-elimination regional but now must beat No. 2 Virginia Tech on Saturday; the Hokies also opened with a loss, falling 6-2 to No. 3 Cal Poly.
The defeat made Saint Mary's first win over a No. 1-ranked team and the first time since 1999 that a No. 1 national seed lost its NCAA tournament opener.
