Ohio Releases 100mph Crash Evidence in Mackenzie Shirilla Double-Murder Appeal

Newly released jail calls, text messages and bodycam footage have put Mackenzie Shirilla’s case back in focus as the 21-year-old asks the Ohio Supreme Court to review her murder conviction.
The records revisit the July 31, 2022 crash in Strongsville, where prosecutors said Shirilla deliberately drove her Toyota Camry into a brick building at more than 100 mph, killing Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19.
Texts cited by local media show Shirilla describing blackouts before the crash, including a July 2, 2022 message about her “worst black out,” while other messages included threats such as “I’m gonna kill someone.”
Her lawyers argue trial counsel failed to fully investigate whether POTS could have caused her to lose consciousness and explain why she never braked, after a lower court said her postconviction petition was filed one day late.
Prosecutors still say the crash was intentional murder, not reckless driving, and the case has drawn renewed attention after Netflix released “The Crash” on May 15.
