Alder Hey Children's Hospital confirmed the death of 15-year-old Chiedza Nyanjowa, who was taken there in critical condition after getting into difficulty in the sea at Formby beach on Bank Holiday Monday.
Merseyside Police said emergency services were called to Albert Road beach at about 15:30 BST, and members of the public tried to help her before she was taken to hospital.
Chiedza's family said she would be greatly missed, describing her as bubbly, churchgoing and aspiring to become a nurse, while thanking those who supported her in the water emergency.
At least 12 water-related deaths have been reported during the hot weather across the UK, including incidents in Lancashire and Cheshire involving other children and teenagers.
The Royal Life Saving Society said warmer weather often brings more accidental drownings, warning that cold water shock remains a major risk even when air temperatures rise.
