Free Google Drive tools proved sufficient for one user's daily PDF work, prompting the cancellation of a paid editor subscription previously used for tasks like scanning, signing and light editing.
Drive's upgraded scanner became the main replacement: it now handles multi-page captures, page retakes, reordering and PDF or JPG export, with a cleaner Material 3 interface and smoother performance.
Built-in editing also reduced the need for premium apps, with filters to sharpen text and an AI cleanup brush that removes stains and smudges directly during scanning.
Gemini inside Drive adds document summaries, key-point extraction and search across PDF text and visuals at no extra cost, though searchable OCR still requires opening files in Google Docs.
The setup still falls short of full PDF suites because native OCR for flat PDFs, advanced form filling and tracked e-signatures remain limited, but it covers most everyday needs for $0.
