Laos Rescuers Free 4 More Miners After 10 Days as 2 Remain Missing in Flooded Cave

Four miners were pulled out of the flooded Laos cave on Saturday, raising the number rescued to five after a 10-day ordeal and leaving two still unaccounted for.
Divers found the group huddled on a rocky ledge about 300 meters from the entrance, but narrow flooded passages, collapse risks and poor visibility delayed evacuation until water could be pumped out.
Rescuers said the route includes a 25-meter tunnel too tight for a U-turn, with unstable clay walls turning the water into "coffee" and complicating movement, temperature control and panic management.
The men are believed to have entered the cave last week to search for minerals such as gold ore before flash flooding swept in sand and gravel that blocked a key exit.
International teams, including divers involved in Thailand's youth soccer cave rescue, are now probing 20 to 25 meters deeper into a heavily flooded section to find the remaining two.
With two miners still missing, how will this rescue shape emergency protocols in Southeast Asia?
Beyond the dramatic rescue, what drives Laotian villagers into such perilous, unregulated mining?
Seven Villagers Trapped: The 2026 Laos Cave Rescue, International Response, and the Dangers of Unregulated Mining
Overview
Last week, villagers entered a cave in search of valuable minerals but became trapped when flash flooding blocked their exit. One villager managed to escape and alerted authorities, leading to a complex rescue operation. Rescuers established a base deep inside the cave, which required navigating over 200 meters of submerged, narrow tunnels. From this base, divers had to cross another flooded section to reach the trapped men. Five villagers were successfully rescued between May 29 and 30, 2026, while efforts continue to locate and save the remaining two, highlighting the dedication and skill of the rescue teams.
