Brendan John Geier, 26, was charged Thursday with assaulting federal officers and causing bodily injury after prosecutors said he bit two ICE officers outside Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center.
Around 10:30 a.m., demonstrators allegedly blocked a roadway into the facility and ignored orders to move, prompting deportation officers to advance and, authorities say, Geier to struggle, kick officers and bite one forearm and another knuckle.
Both officers were treated at a local hospital, and the Department of Homeland Security said nine people were arrested during Thursday’s clashes as agents used pepper spray and other crowd-control tactics.
The protest site has drawn anti-ICE demonstrations for more than a week, and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said more arrests could follow; hours earlier, he announced a separate arrest over alleged death threats against an ICE officer and family.
