Cook County prosecutors approved a new felony contraband charge Friday after jail staff found a 6-inch shank on Jose Medina during a search around 8 a.m. Thursday.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office said correctional officers recovered a sharpened piece of metal with a handle made from medical tape from the 26-year-old's pants pocket.
Medina has been held since March 23 on murder charges in the March 19 shooting death of 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman at Tobey Prinz Beach in Rogers Park.
Prosecutors say Medina chased Gorman and her friends near a lighthouse and shot her in the upper back as they ran; he has pleaded not guilty and is due back in court June 1.
