Westmoreland Raccoon Tests Positive for Rabies, Exposing 1 Dog

Oneida County reported a rabid raccoon in Westmoreland after the animal was sent to the state Health Department's Wadsworth Center on May 27 and confirmed positive on May 28.
No humans were exposed, but 1 dog that came into contact with the raccoon received a rabies booster vaccination.
County health officials did not disclose where the raccoon was found and urged residents to avoid wild or stray animals acting aggressively, unusually tame, shy, or drooling.
Officials said anyone who sees an animal showing possible rabies symptoms should keep away and contact a local animal control officer.
