The Justice Department said it is trying to identify and arrest a protester filmed outside Newark’s Delaney Hall shouting death threats at a federal agent, his wife and his children.
Todd Blanche called the remarks a federal crime and said authorities have the man’s face on video from Wednesday night’s clash outside the ICE detention center.
Those protests began after detainees alleged they were being denied food, medical care and family contact, and demonstrations have repeatedly turned violent, with objects thrown at agents and pepper spray and batons used in response.
Mikie Sherrill, who had earlier praised "a lot of peaceful protesting" and said ICE agents were inflaming tensions, later said threats of violence were unacceptable and urged officials to de-escalate.
The unrest has intensified scrutiny of Delaney Hall: Sherrill wants it closed, while Sen. Andy Kim was allowed inside and described conditions there as unacceptable.
