Emergency crews recovered 17-year-old David Tita Jr's body from Pick Mere on Tuesday evening after he was reported missing at about 16:50 BST while at the Cheshire lake with friends.
Police, Cheshire Fire and Rescue, a helicopter and specialist underwater search teams carried out an extensive search of the area before finding him later that evening.
David's family described the Crewe teenager as "compassionate, sensitive, brave and full of light," saying the loss would remain with them for the rest of their lives.
His death came during record-breaking heat in parts of the UK, amid 11 recent water-related deaths including a 12-year-old boy found in Lancashire's River Ribble.
