Two Hummer X concepts — a midsize truck and SUV — show GMC exploring smaller, more capable off-roaders rather than the oversized formula of current Hummers.
GM says the vehicles are design exercises with no production plan, but they point to a possible push into cheaper Hummer models after slow sales and production pauses.
Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco are the clear targets: the concepts are sized similarly and add rock-crawling, modular features such as removable parts and easy-to-modify body elements.
EV underpinnings still appear central, with an underfloor battery and front and rear motors suggested by the concepts' packaging and suspension layout.
The Pasadena design team also used recycled fascia pieces and replaced adhesives with clips and fasteners, aiming to make parts easier to reuse, swap and recycle.
Amid a V8 revival, is GM's electric Hummer X a real future product or just a high-tech design fantasy?
Will advanced 3D printing make custom off-roaders affordable, or is it a technology too expensive for the average consumer?
