Rep. Adriano Espaillat arrived at Delaney Hall waving a court order and demanding entry, then called for the Newark immigration detention center to be shut down after going inside.
Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Daniel Goldman spent nearly two hours touring the facility and alleged sparse meals, maggots in food, delayed medical care and little legal representation for detainees.
Goldman said he met a man detained at a green-card interview after 23 years in the U.S., using the case to argue the Trump administration was targeting noncriminal immigrants despite claims it was pursuing the “worst of the worst.”
Espaillat, one of 12 plaintiffs in a lawsuit over congressional access to detention sites, said he would introduce legislation letting governors inspect federal detention centers.
The visit added to escalating unrest outside Delaney Hall after Sen. Andy Kim was pepper-sprayed there a day earlier; pepper spray was used again Wednesday and Thursday as protests continued.
