Matthew Stafford said he appreciated Sean McVay calling before the Rams used the No. 13 pick on quarterback Ty Simpson, adding he understands the team must plan for both now and the future.
At 38, Stafford said he is helping Simpson by answering questions and expects the rookie to absorb coaching, while stressing his own job remains getting himself and the team ready to play.
The comments were Stafford's first since signing a one-year extension last week that keeps him under contract through the 2027 season, though he said he still does not know how long he will play.
Stafford said McVay has made clear he can remain the Rams' quarterback as long as he performs at a high level, after a 2025 season in which he won MVP with 4,707 yards and 46 touchdown passes.
