Defending Education said National PTA materials on race, gender and immigration are shaping state and local chapters, arguing the group has moved beyond fundraising and family engagement into partisan K-12 advocacy.
National PTA documents cited by the watchdog frame DEI as central to its mission, promote early conversations about race, and support limiting school cooperation with immigration enforcement involving undocumented students.
2020 and 2026 chapter actions in Washington were highlighted as evidence of that reach, including an anti-racism resolution requiring audits and training and immigration guidance on responding to enforcement at school events.
Ohio, San Francisco, Montgomery County and a Portland elementary PTA were also cited for anti-racism trainings, legislative advocacy, ICE-response organizing and reading lists focused on whiteness and race.
National PTA rejected the criticism, saying its resources are meant to foster respectful dialogue, family engagement and safe, inclusive school communities where all children can succeed.
