HBO debuts “Miss You, Love You” on May 29 after buying the film following a Sundance market screening, giving the two-year-old project a TV release instead of a wider theatrical run.
Allison Janney stars as Diane, a widow reeling from her husband’s death after Parkinson’s, opposite Andrew Rannells as her son’s assistant Jamie, who helps arrange the funeral while the son may miss it.
Jim Rash wrote and directed the largely two-hander set in New Mexico, using sharp, stagey dialogue to tackle grief, caregiving, infidelity, divorce and unrequited love without heavy sentimentality.
The review singles out Janney’s performance as one of her finest, arguing the film deserves more attention than HBO-acquired titles such as “Bad Education” and “The Tale” have typically received.
UK and Australia release dates have not yet been announced, underscoring the film’s modest rollout despite strong notices and a cast-led specialty-drama profile.
