Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple is targeting a 2028 iPhone 21 launch with a new ultrawide camera design that could support 200MP capture and 8K video.
COB, or chip-on-board, would replace Apple’s current flip-chip setup by mounting the sensor face up with wire bonding, improving heat dissipation and optical alignment.
That cooling gain matters because Apple’s current ultrawide modules are thought to be constrained at 48MP partly by overheating, leaving them behind main wide-angle cameras.
Kuo also said Sunny Optical is well positioned to supply the new camera components, suggesting Apple is already lining up partners for the shift.
