Brighton & Hove Coroner's Court on Friday opened an inquest into the deaths of three sisters who died in the sea off Brighton beach on 13 May.
Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, were from the Uxbridge area of London; senior coroner Penelope Schofield offered condolences to their father, who joined remotely.
Sussex Police are still investigating how the women came to be in the water, but officers told the court they were satisfied there was no third-party involvement.
The sisters' causes of death have not yet been ascertained, and Schofield said she hoped the inquest would curb social media speculation about how they died.
