Overview

Since 2018, after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali took office, Ethiopia has faced escalating conflict, with a sharp rise in violence especially against the Amhara region and its people. The Ethiopian state has been accused of a campaign involving dispossession, displacement, and severe repression of the Amhara population. This has led to widespread unrest and a severe humanitarian crisis nationwide. By May 2026, the government had carried out 362 drone strikes, causing nearly 40,000 casualties, including over 14,000 deaths. These state-led actions have intensified the crisis, highlighting the urgent need for peace and accountability.
