ECB Warns Iran War Could Lift Euro-Area Inflation Expectations, Bolstering Rate-Hike Case

A European Central Bank blog post said the Iran war may push euro-area consumers’ medium-term inflation expectations higher, adding to arguments for tighter policy.
The ECB said households are now more likely to expect faster price increases because the 2022 inflation surge after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine left a lasting imprint.
Earlier geopolitical shocks created a “double scar” on consumer expectations, the post said, suggesting new conflict could make inflation psychology more sensitive.
That risk matters because firmer consumer inflation expectations can complicate the ECB’s effort to keep price growth anchored and strengthen the case for interest-rate hikes.
