Samsung Launches 6-Month Galaxy Watch 8 Study for GLP-1 Muscle Loss

  • Samsung and Massachusetts General Hospital will run a six-month clinical study to test whether Galaxy Watch 8 can track muscle loss in adults starting GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro.
  • The trial will compare the watch’s body-composition, activity and heart-rate readings — plus tailored exercise guidance — against standard care and DXA scans, the clinical gold standard for fat and muscle measurement.
  • Samsung says the effort targets a growing problem as nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adults has taken GLP-1 drugs, whose appetite suppression can reduce muscle as well as fat and harm strength, mobility and organ health.
  • The study also gives Samsung a potential edge over Apple Watch and Pixel Watch devices, which do not offer on-device bioelectrical impedance analysis, though the 100-person trial remains an early feasibility test.
