Franci Matoz was named Slovenia’s interior minister on Thursday in Janez Jansa’s newly unveiled cabinet, a surprise choice for one of the government’s most powerful posts.
Jansa is assembling his fourth cabinet with close allies, and Matoz has served as the premier’s lawyer in all of his highest-profile legal cases.
Those cases included Jansa’s 2013 conviction over an arms-deal bribe, which brought a two-year sentence before Slovenia’s Constitutional Court later overturned the ruling.
The appointment underscores Jansa’s effort to place trusted loyalists in key ministries as he shapes the direction of his new government.
