Five seasons after pitching the show in 2019, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky said Hacks always aimed for Deborah and Ava ending together, still workshopping jokes rather than separating.
The finale turns on Deborah revealing she is dying and heading to Zurich for assisted suicide, only to decide in the last minutes that writing with Ava is still worth living for.
