Officers responding just after 8 a.m. Thursday to Piopio Street found an unresponsive woman near the Wailoa Art Center; she was pronounced dead at Hilo Benioff Medical Center at 8:38 a.m.
Police said the woman had head and facial injuries consistent with an assault, and detectives opened a homicide investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday to determine the exact cause of death.
No suspect was in custody Thursday, and investigators asked witnesses to contact Detective Sybastian Keltner or Crime Stoppers, which said anonymous tips could qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.
Police said there is no indication the Hilo homicide is connected to the separate hunt for a suspect tied to three killings in Puna.
