Airtel has rolled out Priority Postpaid, using 5G network slicing to give postpaid users a more consistent mobile internet experience in congested areas such as concerts, stations and dense urban zones.
The plan is aimed at lifting revenue by pushing users toward higher-value postpaid tiers: Airtel’s FY26 ARPU was ₹257 versus Jio’s ₹211, while the company says sustainable returns require ARPU above ₹300.
The backlash centers on India’s 2018 net neutrality rules, which bar telecom operators from degrading or preferentially treating internet access; critics say a premium fast lane could disadvantage the 94%-95% of India’s 126 crore mobile users who are prepaid.
Airtel argues its 5G network still has spare capacity, so reserving a slice for postpaid users does not currently hurt others, but regulators will likely focus on whether that remains true as 5G adoption scales.
The commercial upside is also uncertain: a reported postpaid-prepaid ARPU gap of about ₹129 in 2020 had narrowed to just ₹5 by 2025, raising questions over how much Priority Postpaid can really move the needle.
