Nine rioters were arrested Thursday night after anti-ICE demonstrators clashed with federal agents outside Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center on the sixth straight night of protests.
About 100 protesters surrounded the facility, and DHS said rioters bit, kicked and punched officers, prompting ICE agents to push into the crowd and use pepper spray.
The confrontation marked a further escalation after six demonstrators were arrested Wednesday, while DHS said local and state police largely did not assist federal officers.
The protests began after detainees alleged poor medical care, inadequate food and due-process violations; DHS denied the claims and said detainees receive meals, water, hygiene supplies and phone access.
Federal authorities are also seeking people who allegedly threatened to kill ICE agents and their families, as New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill blamed ICE for the violence and called demonstrators peaceful.
