A newly described wasp preserved in Burmese amber from Myanmar has been named Gwesped piastrii, honoring McLaren Formula 1 driver Oscar Piastri.
The research article said the name recognized Piastri's F1 achievements and reflected the amber's color, which reminded the first author of McLaren orange.
Piastri learned of the honor during an off-week before the Monaco Grand Prix and reacted positively to the unusual tribute.
The naming comes during an uneven season for the 25-year-old Australian, who has podiums in Japan and Miami but finished 11th in Canada after a tire gamble and a 10-second penalty.
